RE: School Days Per Year in Other Countries

You asked what the average number of days of school per year is in England, France, and Italy.

England and Italy each have children spend more days per year in school (192 and 204 days, respectively) than the United States average (178 days), according to information reported in the 1993 "Condition of Education. " France holds school for an average of 174 days per year.

By itself, though, this statistic is somewhat misleading. Because the average number of hours per day spent in school is less in England (5 hours) and Italy (4. 8 hours), children in France (6. 2 hours) and the United States (5. 6 hours) actually spend more time in school per year.

Table 1 indicates for each country the average number of days per year, hours per day, and hours per year that children spend in school.
